Why watch the Temecula School Board?

In November 2022, three new trustees—Dr. Joseph Komrosky, Jennifer Wiersma, and Danny Gonzalez—were elected to the Temecula Valley Unified School District (TVUSD) school board. The board is a five-person local governing body, and school board trustee is a non-partisan position.

The three new trustees formed a “conservative” majority on the board. Starting with their first meeting in December, they have:

  • Banned Critical Race Theory (CRT) and related ideas from being taught in our district

  • Fired the Superintendent and hired a new one without a normal hiring process

  • Delayed approving new K-5 social studies curriculum until forced to do so by threats from the State of California

  • Delayed approving already negotiated COLA and raises for teachers and staff

  • Hired several firms without getting competitive bids (consultants, search firm, lawyers)

  • Been sued for their CRT ban and contracted with a law firm to defend them, even though defense was already covered by the school district’s insurance

  • Caused such dissension in the community that multiple Sheriff’s Deputies and a private search firm had to be hired for School Board meetings

What’s the impact of these decisions, and why are they making them? What’s really going on in Temecula, California?
